Basic Power Cables can carry up to 150 P/s. They will begin to burn if either power usage or power generation exceeds 150 P/s.
Usage and generation are checked separately. For example, using 149 P/s while generating 149 P/s is safe.
When a cable reaches more than 90% of its limit, it will begin to sparkle as a warning. It will not take damage until the 150 P/s limit is exceeded.
For example, connecting three Medium Electric Thrusters and setting them to 100% thrust will push power usage above 150 P/s. The cables will start to sparkle and will burn after a few seconds.
To prevent permanent damage, connect a Fuse Box to the circuit and set its limit to 150 P/s. If power usage exceeds this value, the Fuse Box will disconnect the batteries from the thrusters.
After the Fuse Box turns red, you must manually switch it back on to reconnect the batteries.
